  • 25+ schools involved across Senegal
  • 10-lesson curriculums
  • Thousands of students reached across the first implementation cycle

1๏ธโƒฃ Our Plan and Vision

It began with a simple yet ambitious goal โ€” to integrate sustainability education into every Senegalese primary classroom.

Ubuntu Roots partnered with Teach For Senegal and the Government of Senegal to co-create a 10-lesson sustainability curriculum that connects global challenges with local realities โ€” from climate change to sustainable farming.

This stage focused on curriculum design, translation, and aligning with national education goals to ensure long-term integration.

2๏ธโƒฃ Meeting the Young Teachers for the First Time

Our first real step came when the group of 50 Teach For Senegal fellows came togetherโ€” passionate young educators preparing to shape the future of Senegalese classrooms.

In our kickoff session, the 50 fellows got acquainted with each other and we introduced the Ubuntu Roots framework, shared the vision for sustainability education, and co-built lesson ideas tailored to Senegalโ€™s communities.

3๏ธโƒฃ Connecting Across Borders: Online Collaboration Sessions

To maintain collaboration and support, the Ubuntu Roots team hosted a series of online meetings and follow-up workshops with Teach For Senegal fellows. These sessions became a space for exchange, reflection, and creativity โ€” where teachers shared their classroom experiences, discussed challenges, and brainstormed new ways to make sustainability tangible for young learners.

Through these virtual gatherings, fellows presented stories from their schools โ€” how students turned old plastic bottles into watering cans, or how a class discussion about trees led to a student-led planting project. Each meeting became more than a check-in; it was a community of practice โ€” one that crossed borders and time zones, uniting educators with a shared purpose.

Ubuntu Roots mentors also provided ongoing guidance on lesson facilitation, storytelling techniques, and localized adaptation of the curriculum to match the realities of rural and urban classrooms alike. The energy was infectious: teachers inspired one another, and what began as isolated lessons started to grow into a national movement of sustainability education in action.

4๏ธโƒฃ Bringing Change to Life: Teachers in Classrooms

Now, the vision is reality. Fellows are leading sustainability lessons in classrooms across Senegal, engaging thousands of students through activities on waste management, water conservation, and farming practices. Students are reusing bottles, planting crops, and sharing what they learn with their families, transforming education into daily action.
